Detailed Vacuum Review
The Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner is a machine that utilizes Dyson Ball technology for smooth maneuvering and comes with Root Cyclone technology to ensure that there is no clogging or loss of power. Outfitted with a telescopic wand, motorized brush-bar, lifetime HEPA filter, and on-board tool kit, the Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner is a good value at $420.98. A 5-year warranty on parts and labor is also included.
The Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright is a machine that has terrific suction and a lot of features. The telescopic wand extends the reach of the cleaner to about 16 feet, allowing access to ceilings as well as baseboards. The brush-bar has a switch that the operator can turn off when the hose attachment is in use. This is a nice feature because it prevents the brush-bar from over-beating the floor material underneath the vacuum. The motorized brush-bar is made with stiff bristles that agitate the carpet and bounce dirt straight into the vacuum cleaner.
The lifetime HEPA filter is washable and reduces the particles let back into the air by 150 times the ratio that went in. The 1/3 gallon hygienic collection bin empties by pressing a button and is meant to be a less messy way to empty a bin but experiences with some Dyson models have had a less than satisfactory rating with many cleaners reporting jamming and floating dust particles that seem to defy the effectiveness of the HEPA filter.
At a little over 16 lbs, the Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright is on the moderate side for weight. The 24 ft power cord is a bit short for anything other than small residential use and doesn't allow the operator enough distance to be able to go from area to area without having to unplug and replug the unit, wasting a lot of time and increasing the hassle of unplugging other electronic appliances. The reach of the vacuum cleaner extends to about 40 feet if the length of the extension wand and hose are taken into consideration with the length of the power cord.
The ball technology utilized in this model allows for more maneuverability, but can be hard to get used to. The ball glides over the flooring easily, but the motion tends to be very different from traditional vacuuming and can be too awkward for some cleaners to get used to. The proper vacuuming technique for a Dyson vacuum cleaner tends to be more like a side-to-side motion instead of the regular back and forth direction used by the majority of machines available on the market today. Some cleaners are comfortable with Dyson's ball technology and can get used to the difference while other consumers have been annoyed by its novel design and find little difference in the ergonomic switch in direction.
Overall, the Dyson DC25 is a powerful vacuum but it is not recommended for use on wool carpeting, oriental-type rugs or wood flooring because the suction can cause the machine to scratch across surfaces, damaging them in the process. The powerful suction has been known to rip individual fibers out from the carpet backing and can leaving bare spots and worn areas, especially on fine rugs and carpets made with wool.
